PCIT in a Time-Limited World

CE Hours 1

About this course

Time constraints, structural barriers, and variable rates of engagement continue to challenge the real-world delivery of Parent–Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), particularly for families with high caregiving demands. Building on prior work demonstrating the effectiveness of an 18-week time-limited model of PCIT, this symposium introduces and evaluates an adaptive, response-guided approach designed to optimize efficiency while preserving clinical impact. In this updated model, families are systematically assessed at 12 weeks to determine treatment response; treatment responders complete PCIT at 12 weeks, whereas non-responders receive up to 18 weeks of care with additional intervention. The first presentation will examine the overall effectiveness of this shortened, response-guided PCIT model, with a focus on changes in child disruptive behaviors and observed parenting skills (N = 100). Predictors of treatment engagement, retention, and outcomes will also be explored to identify which families benefit most from abbreviated care versus extended support. The second presentation evaluates the impact of this time-limited model (N=100) on broader caregiver outcomes, including parenting practices and parent mental health, extending the focus beyond child behavior change alone. The final presentation offers a clinical discussion of implementing time-limited PCIT in practice, highlighting how coaching strategies and therapist decision-making may differ from traditional criteria-based models. Collectively, this symposium aims to advance a flexible, data-informed framework for PCIT delivery that aligns treatment intensity with family response, enhances feasibility, and supports equitable access to and engagement with effective parenting interventions in a diverse and time-limited world.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the structure and clinical rationale of a response-guided, time-limited PCIT model, including decision points for 12- versus 18-week treatment duration.
  • Identify child, caregiver, and treatment-related predictors of engagement, retention, and outcomes that differentiate families who benefit from abbreviated PCIT from those requiring extended intervention.
  • Apply clinical decision-making and coaching strategies specific to time-limited PCIT that differ from traditional proficiency-based models to support efficient and equitable treatment delivery.

Dr. Acosta earned her doctoral degree in Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology and completed her residency and postdoctoral fellowship at the Mailman Center. Dr. Acosta a licensed psychologist whose research and clinical expertise focus on increasing access and engagement in evidence-based interventions for high-need families, with a particular emphasis on behavioral parent training, pediatric sleep health, and addressing healthcare disparities in underserved populations. Her translational research leverages sleep health as a transdiagnostic target for improving child and family well-being and incorporates innovative, data-driven approaches to optimize care delivery. She has been awarded federal funding, including an NICHD F31 National Research Service Award, and contributes as PI and Co-I on projects aimed at advancing behavioral health equity.

  • Abigail Peskin, PhD

Abby Peskin, Ph.D. is a child psychologist working remotely in FL for the University of Miami with a specialty working with young children and their families, and experience with anxiety, depression, selective mutism, disruptive behaviors, trauma and developmental delays, but a particular niche in working with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Abby has co-founded a 501c3 non-profit organization - Play it Forward is a toy lending library with a focus on equitable access to high-quality, developmentally supportive toys and inclusion for children with disabilities. We have recently partnered with the Miami-Dade public library system, where we will be able to distribute hundreds of sets of toys for children all throughout the county, including adaptive toys for children with disabilities in the catalog. Abby engages in research in her job at the University of Miami, with a focus on decreasing family disparities and increasing access to needed services. Recently she has published papers about the telehealth translation and implementation of PCIT and evaluating our screening and recruitment procedures for whether they're reaching the Miami-Dade population in an equitable manner (i.e., are we reaching a larger percentage of wealthy or highly educated families than the percentage in the Miami-Dade population as a whole?). Currently she is expanding this research to include evaluations of PCIT for children with ASD (e.g., time-limited models).
