Ethical Considerations in the Use of AI and Digital Technology in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

CE Hours 1

About this course

The presence of various digital technologies such as “artificial intelligence” (AI) has become ubiquitous in our daily lives, assisting in everyday tasks from writing our emails to ordering our groceries to telling us when to refill our medications. As the technology has improved and individuals have grown more comfortable with it, it is no surprise that the use of these technologies has also grown in health and mental health care. However, with the implementation of AI within mental health care, comes a host of ethical concerns that must be assessed, from the privacy of the families we serve to the negative impact of AI use upon the environment (Farhud & Zokaei, 2021). Further, the use of AI and other digital technologies has the potential to increase social inequities if used without careful consideration. As so many PCIT training and research centers work to develop technological adjuncts to PCIT, it is essential for us to develop an ethical framework within which we can make decisions about what is—and is not—acceptable in the implemtation of mental health treatment (Gorelik et al., 2025). This solution-focused panel will include four PCIT trainers with expertise in different areas of technology and AI use in PCIT including the implementation of telehealth, AI as an automated adjunct to PCIT treatment, and the use of virtual reality.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe an ethical framework for the use of AI in mental health care.
