Beyond Coaching PRIDE and Time-Out: Using Case Conceptualization, Culture and Attunement in PCIT

CE Hours 1.5

About this course

In the moment PRIDE (Praise, Reflect, Imitate, Describe, Enjoy) coaching is a hallmark of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) and has been identified as particularly helpful by caregivers learning the model (Woodfield & Cartwright, 2020). To date, few studies have examined what makes for effective coaching (Barnett et al., 2017; Niec et al., 2023; Woodfield & Cartwright, 2020). Quantitative findings suggest responsive coaching (i.e., techniques that reinforce a caregiver’s use of a skill or direct their attention to the child’s behavior) predicts treatment completion and faster acquisition of PRIDE skills for caregivers learning PCIT (Barnett et al., 2017). Qualitative studies reveal that caregivers also find coaching to be essential for supporting their acquisition of skills. Caregivers find coaching helpful for highlighting their personal strengths, building their confidence, and helping them to regulate their own emotions and ways of responding to their children (Woodfield & Cartwright, 2020). While PCIT therapists are taught that they need to coach caregivers to reach CDI and PDI coaching mastery, less guidance has been provided about how to tailor coaching to be responsive and address specific family needs in the context of skill acquisition. This workshop will describe the current state of the literature on coaching in PCIT and use a case study to help participants develop responsive coaching strategies rooted in case conceptualization, aligned with family culture and values, and designed to build the caregiver’s capacity to understand the child’s cues and meet their needs.

  • Utilize case conceptualization, and family culture and values to identify specific coaching strategies for use with a family.
